Apple is developing a self-healing folding screen
Apple filed two new patent applications on the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website this week. The first profile refers to a rod device with a folding screen and is tear-resistant when folded. The screen uses a three-layer panel consisting of a flexible bottom layer, a TFT middle layer, and a protective top layer.
The second profile literally shows a self-healing screen. The screen “heals” minor scratches by itself over time, but the details of the technology are not mentioned. Some sources say Apple’s first foldable device will be the iPad, not the iPhone. Last year, selection Samsung’s mobile division reportedly met with investors to discuss the future of smartphones, saying that Apple will likely release a foldable device in the next two years, but not an iPhone.
Research firm CCI Insight also said that selling a foldable iPhone would be riskier for Apple than selling an iPad. It is believed that Apple has always approached the market with caution and making a foldable tablet is easier than a smartphone.
Earlier, analyst Ming-chi Kuo said Apple is testing a foldable device with a 9-inch display that’s expected to release in late 2024 or early 2025, but comes at a “horrible” price point.
